It’s a once in a lifetime event the

75th Anniversary

of the

Women’s Armed Services Integration Act

signed on June 12, 1948, by President Truman

Join us for an evening in celebration of the enormous contribution of women who have, and are serving in our military.

A long journey to equity in military service was traveled to bring us to where we are today!

A journey worth acknowledging and celebrating!

On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act allowing women to serve as regular members of the military. This year, we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of this piece of legislation along with the amazing journey of women in the military.

HISTORY:

Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, law enacted in 1948 that permitted women to serve as full members of the U.S. armed forces.

During World War I many women had enlisted as volunteers in the U.S. military services; they usually served in clerical roles. When the war ended, they were released from their duties. The same was true during World War II, when an even greater number of women volunteers served in the armed forces.

Although the U.S. Congress in 1943 had given the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) full army status during wartime, the WAC law was scheduled to expire on June 30, 1948. In anticipation of this event, the leaders of the U.S. Army in 1946 requested that the WACs be made a permanent part of their personnel.

Following two years of legislative debate, the bill was passed by Congress in the spring of 1948. Signed into law by President Harry S. Truman on June 12, 1948, as the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, it enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members of not only the army but also the navy, marine corps, and the recently formed air force.

The law limited the number of women who could serve in the military to 2 percent of the total forces in each branch. https://www.britannica.com/event/Womens-Armed-Services-Integration-Act

In 2018, the State of Texas celebrated its first official Women Veterans Day, and the 70th Anniversary of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act with major celebrations held across the state of Texas.

Once again we come together for a celebration that educates, validates, and commemorates the journey of women who have, and are serving in our military!

In 2018, VWEC in collaboration with Representative Neave, and a team of committed Women Veteran volunteers hosted a full day of events kicking off the morning at Dallas City Hall, where each female veteran was presented with a certificate of appreciation, and those with more than 20 years of services received flowers. It is a day we will remember as a special celebration, where we took the time to highlight, and show appreciation to our women veterans.

HISTORY:

Women Veterans Day, also referred to as Women Veterans Recognition Day and Women Veterans Appreciation Day, is the anniversary of the day the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act (pub.L. 80–625, 62 Stat. 356) was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman on June 12, 1948. Prior to then, only women nurses could serve in the regular and reserve forces during peacetime.

But why do we even need a Women Veterans Day?

Today there are still many women Veteran history lessons to be taught. The first Women Veterans Day was celebrated on June 12, 2018, and is currently a state-recognized commemoration in California, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

There are currently almost two-million women Veterans in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Territories/Foreign, according to VA. https://news.va.gov/89813/origin-women-veterans-day/

This year, VWEC continues our tradition of acknowledging Women Veterans Day, and this once in a lifetime occasion with a White Diamond Gala, on Monday, June 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Comerica BusinessHQ.

Our event will feature an elegant pass of high end appetizers, two sparkling fountains, live entertainment, a designer fashion auction that will take one's summer attire (if you're lucky enough to have the highest bid) to the next level, and a salute to Women Veterans across our state.
