January 2020
Dear Friends & Supports,
We are so excited to kick-off the decade with preparations for our third official Women Veterans Day in the State of Texas. This year our theme is “Connect, Collaborate & Celebrate,” and this is your formal invitation to join our team of awesome supporters committed to educating, validating and commemorating women who have and are serving in our military.
A little history on Women Veterans Day in the State of Texas—on June 9, 2017, Texas Senate Bill 805 designating June 12th as Women Veterans Day was signed by Governor Abbott and passed into law: https://legiscan.com/TX/text/SB805/2017. This is due to the hard work of Representative Neave and her colleagues in the Texas House and Senate to recognize when President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Women's Armed Services Integration Act on June 12, 1948, allowing women to serve as regular members of the military.
Over the past three years, we celebrated the first official Women Veterans Day 2018, and the 70th Anniversary of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration with a full array of Women Veterans Day events engaging more than 300 women veterans and patriots. Last year, Dallas continued its tradition in collaboration with the Office of Representative Neave, Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD), Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center (VWEC) and our Community Planning Committee with the 2019 theme S.H.E.R.O.E.S. (Serving, Honoring, Empowering and Restoring Our Esteemed Service-women).
Celebratory activities took place at El Centro College inclusive of an Opening Ceremony and additional activities featuring an educational exhibits “Veteran Women’s War Walk,” a documentary and panel discussion highlighting “Her Stories of Service,” and a vendor showcase of Women Veteran-Owned Businesses ending with an Evening Reception.
This year’s activities are open to women veterans, our brothers in arms and community of patriots. We invite you to join the celebration as a partner, sponsor or volunteer (see attached sponsorship opportunities).
